How to Change When Again Shows Up Anki

All-time Anki Settings: My Recommended Values (Updated for v2.1+)

Hello, this is Lesson 4 of 4 in the Anki Fundamentals costless course. I hope you like it! Permit me know if you lot have any questions or feedback — I'd like to hear what you think! 🙂

In this lesson, you're going to acquire my recommended Anki settings and how settings work in a more than practical manner.

That's considering I don't only want you lot to have "ready-made" templates, only also a complete understanding of how the advice I'm giving you works.

Why? Because I want you to be able to think for yourself rather than employ something you don't fifty-fifty know the purpose of.

But to exist clear, Anki's default settings practise work.

Notwithstanding, in my experience, I constitute the default learning steps (more than on this later) gives a really poor review experience for both newer and older cards.

Newer cards don't get reviewed as frequently, and older cards start back to nix when you've lapsed even partially. (i.e. during tip-of-the-natural language moments)

Once you use these settings I'k going to give you, yous'll be able to avoid these 2 problems right abroad so you'll have a shine review experience every unmarried time.

They're made-for-you settings that I found the most optimal in my learning process. Again, I will as well share with you the underlying concepts (and provided supplementary materials) so y'all can tweak them on your ain.

That being said, I do have to note two things:

  1. My recommended settings are more than geared for conceptual learning than for memorizing vocabulary or isolated facts
  2. Irresolute your settings this way won't really make or interruption your overall memory for conceptual learning. It just enhances the review experience.

Which means if you're constantly forgetting the majority of what you lot've studied even though you lot've already fabricated Anki cards for them, and then mere settings are Non going to care for that trouble.

Luckily, I have a solution for that — you'll learn it at the end of this mail.

The Made-For-Yous Settings

This is an updated version that uses the recommended settings in the "LeanAnki Method" part of the study system course.

For Daily Limits:

  • New cards/day = 9999. New information lacks depth, and should therefore be studied immediately. So you lot demand to retrieve them in order to make them stronger — at to the lowest degree, earlier they fade into oblivion when more complex concepts are still far ahead.

  • Maximum Reviews = 9999. Memory of past knowledge makes future learning easier. But take note that this tin only be true if you take encoded what you've learned earlier making flashcards. Otherwise, you only get fragmented, useless retention that cannot be used every bit an activated semantic context.

For the New Cards, I recommend these settings:

The Learning steps setting means that pressing Again shows the card in ten minutes and pressing Good would bear witness the card after i day, and so after y'all press "Good" on that, you'll see it once more later three days.

So the kickoff number is really the number of minutes the card will evidence up again if you pressed "Once again".

The adjacent 2 numbers determine the intervals when you press "Good".

And like the tab says, all of these only apply to New Cards.

Now, I don't recommend yous pressing "Easy" correct away considering that tends to skip the "learning steps."

You don't want that. Just because a card is easy to remember now doesn't mean information technology's going to be remembered in the future — nosotros have a bias to believe otherwise (cf. Stability Bias) and that's the trap nosotros will autumn into if we don't "filter the bad cards out."

So, merely to be on the condom side, go through all of your learning steps for your new cards by pressing "Practiced." (Obviously, this doesn't apply to graduated cards — more on that in a sec.)

Now how do you know if the card has surpassed the "learning steps"?

You'll know it when the side by side interval in the "Graduating Interval" appears. (in this case, it's 7 days)

When you encounter that option, it means that that specific card volition graduate after you press "good" or "easy". (Think of the steps equally a "grade" in course school — you have to become through all of them, right?)

When a card has graduated, the ease of retrieval (i.eastward. what buttons you press after answering that bill of fare) will then determine how ofttimes that menu will bear witness upwardly in the futurity, rather than the learning steps.

Lastly, you might be wondering why the "Insertion social club" is gear up to Random.

What this does is brand the questions testify up in an interleaved fashion. Interleaved practice helps you dissolve boundaries between subjects, and this is likewise why I recommend letting relevance determine deck cosmos. 1

And then going dorsum to graduated cards…

When the carte du jour has graduated, it volition utilize the "Lapses" and "Advanced" settings:

The Lapses settings, I don't care and then much most that. 10 minutes is already fine for avoiding "mindless recall" when reviewing lapsed cards, and I don't want my poorly-encoded cards disappearing, so I recommend non changing the "Leech Action" to "Append Card." (This usually happens when your cards aren't encoded or future-proof)

Then here'south the "Avant-garde" settings.

I primarily used Anki when I reviewed for my board exams, and I noticed that sometimes in that location were cards that are supposed to be extremely piece of cake merely have very depression intervals.

If you find that you accept those cards, this means that you have forgotten them somehow after they have graduated, and that they have already used the default "New Interval", which is 0%.

So I've set up the "New Interval" setting to 0.60. This is crucial, because if you forgot something you've been successfully recalling for 3 years, do you really take to test yourself as if information technology's a new card?

Clearly NOT. And it'due south an inefficient use of time and energy for a well-learned card.

That's why we concede by turning the new interval to 60%. It's arbitrary, of course, but I wouldn't recommend going below 50%.

This means that if y'all take a graduated card, and you've pressed "Again," then the next interval volition exist ready at 60% of the original. Significant, if you're supposed to see that bill of fare 100 days for a "Good" rating, then pressing "Again" will get in pop up after sixty days (0.6×100=lx) instead of 100.

My rationale here, if it's not clear yet, is that well-learned cards exercise not demand to be reviewed the same way as a newly learned bill of fare.

If the depth of encoding ii is the aforementioned, so there is already a base of operations of storage strength for the lapsed carte du jour. Since the big storage strength slows downwards the rate of forgetting, information technology means that it will exist forgotten way slower than a new card — which by and large has low storage force 3 .

At present, in case you want to acquire more about these settings you can do that here (longer version) and hither. (shorter)

Regarding your reviews with graduated cards, you should printing whatever option in the "Piece of cake" "Expert" "Hard" suits your judgement.

That's because from that point on, yous want the Anki algorithm to do its magic for you.

To epitomize:

  • The New Cards settings utilize to, well, new cards that haven't nonetheless graduated
  • Press "Adept" just for the newer cards to become through all your learning steps and avoid Stability Bias
  • A specific card has "graduated" when you cease the learning steps
  • Printing any review difficulty choice (i.east. Easy, Expert, or Difficult) for graduated cards

Settings Aren't an Verbal Scientific discipline

If you've noticed already, these intervals are incredibly uncomplicated to tweak.

That's because they aren't exact science.

If your goal is to but apply Anki more finer and more efficiently in a practical way…

So do you actually have fourth dimension to overthink nigh the verbal data — i.east. "the pErFeCt aLgOriTHm" — instead of actually spending that time creating improve cards that will improve your cognition base? Learning how to extract important information from a textbook?

Await, fifty-fifty if some garbage news site "knew" what the "most effective & efficient Anki setting" is…

It HIGHLY probable that it fails to accept into account:

  1. The context of what you're learning
  2. How specific your card is
  3. How future-proof information technology is
  4. How well they relate to your previous noesis
  5. …and so on.

…merely because these tin't exist quantified.

In short, even if there'southward available exact scientific discipline out there, it likely fails to business relationship the large picture.

And then I argue it's better to continue this unproblematic.

I caveat, though, is when yous're not using Anki as a tool for learning concepts, but rather just to memorize facts.

I can't speak for that — mayhap the most efficient intervals do exist for it.

(Only hey, I incertitude you're even gonna make it this far if y'all're not gonna apply Anki for learning!)

Anki designers were really criticized for not having "optimal intervals", merely in defence of Anki, Nielsen argued:

I've heard this used equally a criticism of the designers of systems such as Anki, that they make as well many advertizement hoc guesses, non backed by a systematic scientific understanding.

Only what are they supposed to do? Expect 50 or 100 years, until those answers are in?

Surrender design, and become memory scientists for the side by side 30 years, and then they can give properly "scientific" answers to all the questions they demand answered in the pattern of their systems?

We get that exact scientific discipline is good for increasing the take a chance success, but every action doesn't have to wait for exact data, especially if yous want to make progress immediately.

Instead of waiting for memory scientists to somehow find the data for united states of america, we follow the commencement principle of spaced repetition and learn the nuances for ourselves.

That is, to set increasing intervals for reviews.

Simple, and applied.

I might ask, "What if I'yard overtesting/undertesting?"

Y'all'd often hear this from other "advanced beginners", merely frankly, information technology's impractical to stress yourself over them.

In case you lot're asking the aforementioned question, here's the solution:

Adjust the settings accordingly.

Plain simple.

Of grade, it's easy to say that the overall review time tin can be sped upward when y'all utilise setting X or Y…

Simply bluntly, there are more important things to accost in the grand scheme of things.

Next Step: How to Use Anki Efficiently

Similar I said, settings alone won't make or break your ability to retain most of the concepts you're learning.

Sure, it might help a fleck — simply the gains would be marginal at best.

It's more of an optimization thing rather than a viability factor.

And, as I've said in the showtime of this Anki Fundamentals series

Anki — or more appropriately, spaced repetition is just ane-3rd of the things you need for learning effectively.

Heed, if you're constantly tweaking your settings and you lot're not seeing any substantial improvements, so the problem is probably non with Anki.

If y'all're interested to know more, then the adjacent grade — How to Use Anki Efficiently — is for y'all.

It's totally gratis, no signups required to showtime.
